78% of the damaged saddles in my shop belonged to owners who conditioned them religiously. Here's why.

A master saddlemaker reveals the hidden truth about petroleum-based conditioners — and the natural alternative that actually heals leather from within.
Saddlemaker applying salve

A 15-year-old saddle restored to competition condition. Oak & Amber™ Leather Salve. One afternoon.

78%
of the saddles that come into my shop for emergency restoration were being conditioned regularly by their owners — with the wrong products. The conditioning itself was killing the leather.

I've been repairing and restoring leather tack for 25 years. In that time, I've watched the same scenario play out hundreds of times: a rider brings me a saddle that's cracking, drying out, or developing a strange plasticky feel on the seat — and when I ask them about their maintenance routine, they tell me they condition it every two to four weeks. Without fail.

The problem isn't the conditioning frequency. The problem is what they're conditioning with.

Most commercial leather products — including the ones sold at every tack shop in Britain — are built on a petroleum base. Neatsfoot oil compound. Mink oil. Silicone-based sprays. They make the leather look great for about 48 hours. Then they start their slow destruction.

"Petroleum products don't penetrate leather. They sit on the surface, swell the fibres temporarily, and then begin to attract dust and moisture. Over time, that creates internal mould and fibre rot that no amount of surface conditioning can reverse."

— Dan Hollister

🔬 Petroleum vs. Hemp Oil & Beeswax

Petroleum-Based (Most Brands): Sits on the surface. Swells fibres temporarily. Attracts barn dust and traps moisture, leading to internal mould.
Oak & Amber™ (Hemp Oil): Penetrates the fibre structure at the molecular level. Replenishes lost natural oils from the inside out.
Chemical Residue: Leaves a greasy film that transfers to your jodhpurs and has a harsh chemical odour.
Zero Residue (Beeswax): Dries completely silky in 15 minutes. Creates a natural waterproof barrier against the British winter.

I started recommending Oak & Amber to my clients about 18 months ago. The first time I used it on a dried-out, cracked western saddle that a client thought was finished, I was impressed. The Hemp Seed Oil visibly absorbed into the leather within minutes. Four coats over two days, and the saddle looked like it had been stored properly for years.

What I particularly appreciate is what it doesn't do. It won't darken your light-coloured English saddles. It won't leave a greasy residue on your jodhpurs or hands. It dries completely in 15 to 20 minutes.

"Your £2,500 custom saddle deserves better than a hardware store petroleum product. Oak & Amber costs £32. A proper custom saddle restoration in my shop costs £280+. The maths is simple."

The British Winter Problem

If you stable in Britain, your leather faces a threat most products aren't built for: the damp-cold cycle. The combination of wet winters, unheated stables, and the damp-dry swings pull moisture from leather fibres faster than any dry summer — then mould sets in.

Oak & Amber's Hemp Seed Oil formula was specifically designed for climates with extreme seasonal variation. It replaces the natural oils inside the fibre structure so the leather retains flexibility through the wet British winters that destroy conventionally-conditioned tack.

Week 1
Cracks begin to close. Leather feels hydrated and pliable. 15-minute dry time, no residue.
Month 1
Full texture restored. Flex points supple again. Zero transfer to jodhpurs.
Month 3
Protected through the season. Your saddler won't recognise it as the same piece of tack.
